1. St. Albans South signalbox became a listed building & has been earmarked for preservation. When I started on the railways I managed to gain access to the box by the stairs which some years later collapse. Surprisingly the lever frame along with the box diagram remained in situ, despite the paint peeling off the ceiling. This is a photo of the box diagram & you can see the lever frame below it.
2. Welsh's Bridge Junction signalbox at Inverness in September, 1985.
3. Worcester Tunnel Junction signalbox, photo also taken in September, 1985.

1. 45106 stands in the Up Reception Sdgs during the 1988 Bescot Open Day. The loco at this time was painted in a variant of BR Green livery & was chosen to be a 'celebrity' loco usually found to work the saily Derby - St. Pancras/St. Pancras - Derby return in the evining until it caught fire near West Hampstead PSB on 03-02-1989 & was subsequently withdrawn & hauled back to Tinsley TMD.
2. 47468+56049 stand outside Crewe Locomotive Works during an open day on 04-07-1987.
3. 37422 'Robert F. Fairlie Locomotive Engineer 1831-1885' stands at CRewe station ready to depart with 1D87 Crewe - Holyhead on 21-05-1996.

These photos were taken on a visit to Knottingley TMD situated in the Iare Valley & supplied motive power for all the local MGR trains that served Drax & Eggborough power stations on 23-03-1996.
1. 56091 'Castle Donnington Power Station' at Knottingley TMD.
2. 56102 stabled on Knottingley TMD. This loco was nicknamed 'Speck Wreck' as one of the Shift Maintenance Engineers at Immingham TMD used to use this loco as a test bed for ny modifications they wanted to carry out to improve the performance in tractive effort on Cl.56 locos. This loco remained within the area of the power desk I worked (Yorkshire/Humberside & East Midlands). The loco had TOPS restrictions applied to it as 'LW' & 'RW' which in effect meant Local Work & Restricted Work only. So 9 times out of 10 it was usually put on out & back turns from Immingham TMD such as Scunthorpe MGR workings or other petroleum out & back jobs. This loco had modified traction motors as it was the test bed to improve the tractive effort over the Deepcar branch in Sheffield. Every know & again I along with the other chaps who worked the Yrokshire/Humberside & East Midlands power desk used tto send this loco to the other end of the country on the Baglan Bay tanks or something similar just to get back at the maintenance staff at Immingham TMD if they had messed us around the the day before much to Mr. Spreckley's annoyance as he kept a close eye on this particular loco each & everyday.
3. 56116+56085 stabled on Knottingley TMD.

On a typical dull winter's day on 27-12-1994 I went around Stratford TMD with a friend & took some photos as the shed was quite full of engines.
1. 47802 in Inter City livery was stabled at the end of one of the loco holding sdgs. At this time this loco was part of Mainline Freight's EWAS pool based at Stratford TMD. This pool of locos had quite a number of Cl.47s in it as well as a wide variety of liveries there were also a number of celebrity locos in it as well, probably more so than any other pool of locos in the entire country such as :-
47004 - BR Green livery
47016 - Railfreight Original livery
47121 - NR Blue
47315 - Dutch livery
47474 - Parcels sector livery
47803 - Infastructure livery(all over yellow)
47711 - NSE livery
47802 as seen here. They used to work trains such as the binliner services between Cricklewood RTS - Forders Sdgs or Northolt - Calvert. They also used to work various departmental trip services from Acton yard or Dicot, pretty much anywhere within Trainload Freight South East's sphere of operations.
2. I took photos of all the Cl.08s on the depot that day, one of which is this one 08715 painted in all over yellow. The reason for the high visibility livery on this loco was due to the fact that it was fitted with a radio controlled system & this loco was the prototype for that. For whatever reason it never came into servoce on a nationwide basis as Cl.08 locos still need a driver on them to work.
3. 08750 another one of Stratford TMD's allocation of Cl.08 stabled at the back of B&C shed.

Some more photos I took around the railways at March.
1. 37053 passes March Whitemoor Junction with 6E16 Duxford - Tees Yard speedlink service which tended to convey mainly traffic from Ciba Geigy's factory at Duxford on 07-07-1987.
2. 31107 between March station & March Whitemoor Jn with 7E80 Royston - Whitemoor speedlink feeder service. The loaded cement tank wagons behind the loco have come from Foxton cement works & the other tank wagons come from Charringtons sdgs at Cambridge.
3. This photo was taken from Hundred Drove which runs past the TMD at March. Stabled on the holding sdgs were 47335, , 31240, 47372 & 31124 on 14-10-1987.

1. 37177 prepares to set back into Whitemoor Yard with 9H32 Wisbech - Whitemoor Yard speedlink trip working. The Wisbech branch was quite busy during a 24 hour period in the week with up to 4 out & back workings. The petfoods train went once in the morning & once in the afternoon to serve Spillers factory whereas another set of trips served the Metal Box factory there conveying steel to & from Wisbech. This is the return morning trip from Metal Box at Wisbech. The guard has got the fire going in the brake van as you can see the smoke coming from the chimmney. Photo taken 11-08-1987.
2.47245 rounds the curve from March station & approaches March Whitemoor Junction with 6S96 1340 Parkeston Quay - Mossend Yard. The loaded cartics behind the loco are imported cars destined for Wrenthorpe Sdgs at5 Wakefield & where marshalled on the rear of 6S96 when it departed from Whitemoor for detachment at Doncaster Belmont Yard. There was also a loco change on this service on arrival at Whitemoor & this loco would go onto March TMD for fuel & water if required. Photo taken 14-10-1987.
3.This loco was quite rare to appear at March TMD working Speedlink services. 47421 'The Brontes of Haworth' This loco was the last of the first 20 Cl.47/4 locos built nicknamed 'Generators' as the electrical system on the first 20 (47401-47421) were totally different to all the other Cl.47s as well as the traction motor control wiring. The first 20 were allocated to Gateshead TMD, but not every depot in the country that signed Cl.47s knew these as they tended to work within the Eastern Region/Scottish Region only. Later they went further afield. This was the only time I saw a 'Generator' Cl.47 at March. It is pictured outside the TOPS office at Whitremoor at the head of 6M90 2130 SLK Whitemoor Yard - Warrington Arpley during the summer of 1988.This was the last evening departure at Whitemoor before the 22.00 shift change & it's first port of call would be Derby St. Marys yard asthe train ran via Peterborough & Manton Jn to gain access to the Midland mainline at Syston North Jn for onward movement to Derby. Derby men were the first midland drivers to ne specfically trained on 47401-47421 as they were usually forund on North East - South West inter regional expresses along with Saltley men as they were usually removed off the train at Birmingham New Street for a back working to the Eastern Region.

1. 47123 approaches Whitemoor Junction from March station with 6H86 King's Lynn - Whitemoor Speedlink feeder service on 09-07-1987
2. 20117+20041 pass March Whitemoor Junction with 6Y97 Whitemoor - Bury St. Edmunds on 24-02-1988. The train is conveying empty HSA wagons bound for Mayer Newman scrapyard at Snailwell.
3. 31163+31255 passes Whitemoor Junction with 6M90 2130 Whitemoor Yard - Warrington Arpley speedlink trunk service during the summer 1988. As you will notice in this photo the lines tyo the left of the locos are all rusty due to them being no longer in use as the area was being rationalised.

These photos I took at Bescot on 25-05-1987.
1. 37240 stabled outside the north end of Bescot TMD. Directly behind the Cl.37/0 are tanks where diesel fuel, water & lubricating oil & antifreeze was kept & behind those orange tanks is what remaind of the former steam shed at Bescot. Today only the orange tanks are still there.

1. 56066+31117+31259+37128 & some other locos are stabled on the former Up Reception Sdgs which at this time were used as loco holding sdgs. None of this exists today. This is where the VQ(Virtual Quarry) is located.
2. You could walk along the river bank & see all the locos stabled on the loco holding sdgs. The previous photo was taken from Bescotr Stadium station, whereas this photo was taken in a field that sat between the M6 motorway & Bescot marshalling yard with the river bank in front. Here you can see some of the many Cl.20 locos stabled there. 20031+20145 are 2 of those in this photo.

Back in the summer 1998 I was in the car with my wife on our way to her Aunty's house & en route through the back roads of Lincolnshire between Peterborough & Holbeach I came across this redundant signalbox which was next to a level crossing & an old station building which had been converted to a house. As you can see from the photos there was no name plque on the box, nor were there any steps up to the where the old lever frame was still in situ. I've spoken to some people I worked with at March as this bix was clearly on the M&GN Joint line & some have suggested that this box could have been Postland or French Drove siognalbox, but have never had it confirmed. Just curious to know if anyone on SimSig may know this box & if it is still in situ today? When these photos were taken we were on our way to Waploade St. Catherines which was a small hamlet near Holbeach. Would be appreciated if someone could actually name this box.

Could well be Postland SB, this link's photos look a good match.

Edit:- the electricity supply pole looks to be an exact match in both sets.

Edit2:- Google street view

Also definitely not French Drove, and is more off the likely route of your trip, whereas Postland SB is bang on route.

Postland it is then. Thanks for the link Andy. Interesting to see that the box is still there. There is a box in Holbeach IIRC next to the main road & when I saw back in 1998 it look like it had just veen built. It had been painted throughout in original colours & alkso the lever frame inside it had been painted. Shame no one does the same to this box.

1. Something you don't see eveyday. 87022 'Cock O' the North' departs Bedford station en route to London St. Pancras on 06-07-1991 due to the OLE being down between Nuneaton & London Euston which usually results in the majority of WCML services being diverted into St. Pancras. On this occasion the AC electric locos worked between St. Pancras & Bedford where a Cl.47/4 was attached to take the trains to Nuneaton via Wigston South Jn.
2. 37093 in Westbury Down Sdgs on 06-03-1995.
3. 59001 'YEOMAN ENDEAVOUR' also at Westbury Down Sdgs on 06-03-1995.

2. One of Immingham TMDs 'ghost' locos 60022 stabled at Knottingley TMD on 23-05-1996.
3. An interloper in Loadhaul territory, Mainline Freight liveried 58036 passes Wrawby Junction signalbox with 6K53 Worksop yard - Immingham Coal Import Terminal on 16-05-1996. This train actually ran via Scunthorpe & was being driven by Worksop No.1 driver Dave Darwin who lived near me in Chesterfield. I actually gave him the photo I took of this train approaching Wrawby signalbox & have only this one as a photo.
