Sheesh! Aren't they butt-ugly though! Where's the refined looks of the Westerns or the class 40s or the Peaks or the 50s....?

The galling thing sbout these locos is yes, they will be the most powerful locos to run on British metals... but not ever - only since Kestrel (aka HS4000) which a) was more powerful, b) had a much higher top speed and c) was only 6 tons heavier! And BR said it was too heavy to run on their metals! Funny how times (and rules) can change!

I take it there's no ETS fitted! That mean we're still stuck with pathetic class 67s for rail tours then... i.e. 0-60mph... eventually!

I discovered recently that a humble class 08 has a higher max. tractive effort than a class 67! Class 08: 35,000lb, Class 67: 33,000!! No wonder we slowed to 15mph up Dainton bank last year!

I'd have thought that connection was reserved for FM Rail surely?? Only they could have sent out a rescue loco with a near-empty diesel tank! AND deploy MK3 stock on a charter train on the hottest day of the year (i.e. 32C in the shade) with no air con working!!! I lost the will to live that day: the ambient temp inside the coach reached 43C! At least while we were moving there was a zephyr of a breeze which came in from the door windows in the vestibule (we wedged the coach end sliding doors open) but when the train stopped, we melted! The charter went to Barrow Hill for the day - it felt more like Barrow HELL!

Apparently the class 70s have a;ready earned the nickname of "Predators" as, I am reliably informed, they somewhat resemble the creature/android/whatisit from that series of films!

And yes, Peter, it's the "nobbly bits" that make it so ugly IMO!

Ugly Bettys on the move!

66585 dep Newport ADJ midnight on 0Z70 with Betty 1 (70001) and Betty 2 (70002) en-route to Stoke Gifford yard.

One loco will be left there for crew training, whilst the other is scheduled to be hauled tomorrow night to Leeds Midland Road.

My.....they are darn ugly!

What purpose do the knobbly bits serve? With the EE types the noses housed useful equipment; these look as though they are riveted on (with no attempt to hide the join) as an after thought soley for asthetic purposes.

From Railforums - suggested name was Huxleys after Huxley Pig. Didn't quite understand until I saw the video and OMG that name is right on for them LOL

I believe they're collision override preventers; the groves & ridges engage to prevent frames overriding each other ant telescoping (it says 'ere). The Networker EMUs & DMUs also have them, albeit hidden under plastic casings so they look a bit less ugly, but of course they're at a different height to these... I think they call it joined up thinking!

I think "Ugly Betty" is a much better nickname than "Predator" I reckon it will stick!

Wonder how long it will be before one gets used on a "Crank-Ex" (er, sorry, a charter railtour). After all, Class 59s, 60s, 66s & 92s have been used on these before!

I remember earlier this year we went on a crank-ex over Copy Pit Summit using a Class 92 & 60 which got markedly delayed returning to Doncaster due to the plethora of PSRs over the Copy Pit line. Upon arriving at Doncaster, we heard considerable invective & colourful language from outside the coach (like "where the *&£% have you been?"and after the 60 was detached & the 92 was re-attached and we got the RA & green light from Doncaster, from a standing start we were doing 40mph by the time we left the end of the platform! I'm amazed a coupling didn't break! Admittedly it was on dry rails!

I see what you mean about the MTU-sounding engine! They do have a bit more of an interesting sound to them than the class 66/67 (ying, ying, ying, ying!)

That's a nice bit of video as well!

Saw one referred to today as a "fugly". I think that just about sums it up!

Technically they're not new locos as such as I believe that they have been tested and run a bit in America before being shipped over here so they've already accumulated some rail mileage etc. Still, if they're gonna clag that much then I could slowly get used to liking them :)

"Fugly" works quite well. Change that slightly to "FUgly" so the F stands for Freightliner and the U is the start of the word Ugly. So it's longer name is Freightliner Ugly (or even Freightliner Ugly Betty) then you shorten that to FUgly or even Freightliner Ugly Betty shortened to FUgly Betty! If you then pronounce that as "F. Ugly Betty" it then implies the F word to be a rude one... :lol:
