BBC Two to take viewers underground in new observational documentary series Many may notice that they've been ever so original with the naming of this... Any views and / or opinions expressed by myself are from me personally and do not represent those of any company I either work for or am a consultant for. ITV did two series some time ago also titled 'The Tube'. It is available on DVD and is an excellent watch. Be interested to see if the BBC can tackle it in a different way.

I was interviewed/filmed working for the series, and the best information they could give was that it would probably be 6 hour-long episodes to be shown February/March next year - obviously subject to change. During filming we asked what the programme title would be, and were told that "The Tube" was a working title, and not confirmed - owing to issues with confusing it with the original series. Apparently the format will be completely different to the ITV version. Last edited: 23/10/2011 at 17:51 by metcontrol Log in to reply |

The Tube was shown on Sky 3 some years ago. Quite interesting how they locked every thing up to run a shuttle from Stanmore.

According to Sharetv.org (which are usually quite precise about scheduling): BBC2 Episode 1: Feb 20th 9:00 PM (UK time) Episode 2: Feb 27th 9:00 PM (UK time) Any further episodes haven't yet been scheduled (at least as far as Sharetv.org. Please don't advertise torrents (RE deleted post) - I believe the only valid source is BBC iPlayer, as mentioned above. I realise it's not available for everybody but it doesn't make it right to watch pirated versions.

Just watched Episode 1 - very entertaining. Forgot about naughty links on this forum, sorry. It probably won't reach downunder for at least six months. Quote: This is a customer announcement. We apologize for the last train being cancelled at short notice. This was due to significant vomit in the carriages. I laughed till it hurt. We don't hear that type of frankness on the Metro in Melbourne. It made me wonder (thinking of Lime Street again) whether an appropriate terminating description for that train might have been BARF. (added) How about that marvellous euphemism "passenger action" being added to the long list of causes of delay or cancellation of service? (I don't recall seeing in any of the sims I've played.) I'd guess that stabbing someone on the platform would qualify as passenger action. However, even Melbourne suburban railways can be exciting at times. http://au.news.yahoo.com/vic/latest/a/-/newshome/12971853/vandals-threaten-to-stab-train-driver/ Last edited: 21/02/2012 at 11:19 by maxand Log in to reply |

Geoff Whilst I agree with what you are saying it does not have to be a torrent to enable you to see it. There are plenty of VPN's out there who use a UK based server. For a small monthly subscription you can use the watch live television facility available to you boys in the UK and that is not a pirated version. Geoff Log in to reply |

PA messages depend an awful lot on the creativity of the operators (be they drivers, station staff or dedicted train announcers). I suspect nowadays everybody is supposed to stick to a script, but you do occasionally get something better late at night when the brass is safely tucked up at home. But there used to be some real characters. One of the best I ever knew was at Liverpool Street (Central Line), and in fact he was the signalman there (the box was in an enlarged cross-passage between the platforms). He had a wonderful deep, resonant voice that needed no amplification to resound through the tube tunnel. And a very nice line in announcements. One of his more typical was, in the peak, "Hurry along please... we are waiting for you... there is another train behind this one and another one behind that and another one behind that..." by which time the doors had closed and the train was getting under way. Probably the best I heard from him was: "Central Line train for Ealing Broadway calling at Bank, St Pauls..." (he went on to list the whole Central Line) "...East Acton, North Acton, West Acton, there's a lot of Actons, all stations..." etc etc. They don't make 'em like that any more Log in to reply The following user said thank you: Josie |

Incidentally there apparently seems to be a growing voice of expats who actually want to pay the license fee from abroad in order to watch BBC from abroad. On the topic of announcements, there's a comprehensive list of delay excuses on the uk.railway FAQ. Some are fairly mundane and scripted. Others include: "A remarkable lack of investment in the infrastructure of the railway system by government," "Portakabin blocking the line," "Some charlie's used an alarm handle as a coat hook" and "Train is delayed due to Madonna." Edit: I've also found a list of much more entertaining ones from the Tube/DLR (going back on topic!) on my computer. I've Googled some of them but wherever I got them from has presumably gone offline, so I've put them on Pastebin. Highlights include: "Train is currently surrounded by 35 sheep; police en route" and "Well, ladies and gentlemen, I can see a light in front of me which I think is probably Bank station, so that's good isn't it? But I personally was hoping for Calais. Perhaps next time, eh?" Last edited: 22/02/2012 at 12:00 by Josie Reason: We apologise for the late arrival of the second paragraph. Log in to reply |

In most of the recent pictures I've seen they've been top 'n' tailed by pairs of 20's. So maybe, once the front pair of 20's have come off to allow the new stock to be shunted into the depot, the researcher has just assumed the train has been shoved all the way from Derby?
