I've just discovered that East Coast Trains are actively looking at re-introducing train names (currently they have 3 I believe) and are taking public suggestions at train.naming@eastcoast.co.uk .

I think they are also looking at loco naming suggestions.

I thought that too.

Have sent a list of train name suggestions- many being reserections- "The Aberdonian" being the one that I particularly liked - where did that silly "Northern lights" name come from.

Also suggested the "Diamond Jubilee" next summer following from the "Silver Jubilee" of summer 1977.

hmm 1977 was on an ER railrover with uncle and the Monday we did an early start to get to The Cross for the inaugral Silver Jubilee - Crepello was imaculate that day and in fine form as well.

My thoughts
91101 St Paddy
91103 Meld (always thought I'd be back)
91107 Pinza
91109 Alycidon
91112 Crepello
91115 Tulyar
91118 Ballymoss
911120 Nimbus

Only leaves another 23 to get names for

An Aside from today and slightly OT - mentioning deltics

I'm not up on the criteria used to select these horses but presumably there are others since that could be added to the list.

In fact looking them up it appears a few won the St Ledger which is run at Doncaster, a more recent one that caught my eye:

Snurge in 1990

Definitely be good to see some new racehorses. We are talking about the greyhounds of the (other-than specially-built high speed lines) railway, of course, aren't we?

Not that I could possibly be accused of being partisan of course...

Wasn't the Deltic 'Crepello' named after a Derby winner in the sixties?

or maybe 'Shergar' for a phantom train?

I can only help one person a day. Today's not your day. Tomorrow doesn't look too good either.

Correct there Andy........also Tulyar and Nimbus.........although not to sure about Royal Scots Grey....lol
Interesting piece of history in that my Great, Great grandfather a gentleman by the name of Singleton was the jockey on the very first St. Ledger winner......a lot of horse thieves somewhere in there also.......

That's one I suggested in my email to EC; The Lincoln Imp being another.

A lot of the regiments after which the Deltics were named have now become Battalions in other regiments - there is probably a very restricted list to pick from these days!

On the racehorse theme, a look at the ancestry of the Deltic names shows what a restricted world racehorses inhabit. A quick summary shows:

D900155 001ST PADDYAncestors include Hyperion (A3), Bois Roussel (A1), Gainsborough (A3), Bayardo (A3), Spearmint (A3), St. Frusquin (A3), St. Simon (A3), Minoru (A3) and Cicero (A3)

D9003 55 003 MELD Sire Alycidon (Deltic), ancestors include Hyperion (A3), Bahram (A2), Blenheim (A3), Gainsborough (A3), and Bayardo (A3)

D9007 55 007 PINZA Ancestors include Blenheim (A3), Manna (A3), Neil Gow (A3) and Lemberg (A3)

D9015 55 015 TULYAR Sire Tehran (A2). Ancestors include Bois Roussel (A1), Solario (A3), Spearmint (A3), Gainsborough (A3), St Simon (A3), Bayardo (A3)
I've gone from memory on the steam classes so the guess-work could be a little skew-whiff. No doubt there is a current generation which would reference back to the Deltics and then the steam days.

Happy days Postal.......
60045 Lemberg on stand by on 51A, up Green Street, not to easy to get into via the front door but a necessary risk sometimes..... North Road works an excellent place to visit .....4 sports mixtures for a penny......all gone.
Cannot imagine anyone wanting to name a train after a racehorse these days..

Of course, in the LNER years (where the convention of naming the A3s after Racehorses came from) Horse racing was nearly as popular then as football is now. So alarmingly, extrapolating that tradtion... 91111 "Wayne Rooney" anyone?

Race Horses is a good theme, personally 911xx "Electra" as an homage to the original projects' name would be nice.

How about historic Engineers, Science and Inventors, Starting with those of the railway and railway technology? George Stephenson, Richard Trevithick... And not make it just those from which the company was based.

Sir William Stainer FRS was on a class 86 electric. Sir Nigel Gresley is the name of an A4 pacific that has been preserved.

Don't recall ever seeing Ivatt though and there are probably several other CME's other than the above that could be used....

I was also think of the football like as well James or maybe ruby players. What about sporting champions such as Nigel Mansell (F1), Sir Steve Redgrave(rowing), Steve Webster (Sidecar), or Andy Prileaux (touring cars) for example though there are many more.

Sir William Stanier was also applied to a Princess Coronation (or Duchess) no. 46256.

Henry George Ivatt (last CME of the LMSR) did not have a locomotive named after him. However, his father Henry Alfred Ivatt was a former CME of the GNR and the LNER designed (but BR built) A1 no. 60123 bore his name. The LNER and their successors in BR did pay homage to their predecessors and a number of A1s were named after pre-grouping CMEs from the LNER constituents, while no. 525 of the A2 class was named A H Peppercorn after Sir Nigel Gresley's successor. The other railways paid rather less attention to their history than the LNER.

[Edit] Forgot to add that LNER also named no. 500 of the A2 Class after its designer, Edward Thompson.

Just the product of a mis-spent youth hanging round platform ends and having Ian Allan ABCs as my bed-time reading in the late-1950s and 1960s.
