Another train I took a number of photos of at Tempsford Crossing between Sandy & St. Neots on the ECML was 'The Nightrider' service from London King's Cross - Aberdeen. Here 47653 working 1S70 during the summer of 1987 on the Down Fast line. Note the 3 motorail GUVs behind the loco followed by Mk.3 sleepers & Mk.2D/e/f day coaches. The train would have somewhere between 14 - 16 coaches in total.

That may have been the case in the 1970s to early 1980s, but when this photo was taken the motorail GUVs were always marshalled behind the loco. I saw this train on numerous occasions it was one of two 'Nightrider' services from King's Cross to Scotland & the motorail GUVs on both trains were behind the loco.

37504'British Steel Corby'+37505'British Steel Workington' approach Toton Centre for a crew change working 6M47 1050 SX COY Lackenby BSC - Corby BSC on 100787. Note the Toton TMD breakdown crane in the back ground. Toton TMD at this time did not have the capability of lifting power units using an overhead crane within the TMD until EWD extended part of the shed building to accommodate one in 1997. To facilitate power units lifts the breakdown crane at Toton TMD was used.

60010 stands outside the newly constructed extension to the front of Toton TMD where the new overhead crane was installed capable of lifting power units & thus no longer requiring the use of the breakdown crane to do it. Photo taken on 130497.

The all-year GUV motorail services were always referred to as the "tail traffic" when I was Motorail supervisor at Kensington (summer 1981) so on the face of it that would be correct. But putting the GUVs at the head northbound would make shunting at KX or Euston an awful lot easier - putting them at the tail would require either a long shunt of the loaded passenger coaches onto the GUVs in the loading bay or the GUVs loaded and placed in the platform before the rest of the train was brought in. (The latter manoeuvre would've been a lot harder at the Cross as well, as there was no equivalent to the BORs that Euston has). Shunting at the Scottish destination was probably less of an issue, as most of them were through stations (Inverness the big exception, although I don't know how Motorail was dealt with there).

On the other hand, GUVs trailing on the up journey would certainly facilitate the shunting at a London terminus.

The summer-only services from Kensington (which used only carflats by the late '70s, although I believe they used Cartic 4s in the early days) were certainly marshalled with flats in rear, involving a shunt with loaded passenger coaches as the first move in the departure sequence. (Those heading for Scotland then had an engine change within 5 miles as well, although the St Austell was able to get away without further messing around.) Kensington North Main was signalled accordingly, with FPLs on all ends of everything and just about any imaginable move able to be made with passengers loaded!
