This group of photos were taken during the summer of 1992. The location was Clay Cross South Junction where alot of people have taken photos over the years, but today that part is completely fenced off. At the time of these photos I lived in Bedford, but 5 years later I'd end up living approx. 2 miles away from where these photos were taken. During this period there was a radical shift in the use of motive power. Firstly the Cl.60 loco which were new then were slowly coming into squadron service & as a result other locos were being used on different services after being displaced from there usual work as well as other Cl.60 locos still under testing were working other sectors trains as opposed to what the emblem on the loco side said.
1. 31435 heads north on the Down Goods line light engine just passing Station Road overbridge.
2. 37073 'Fort William/An Gearasdan' heads towards Clay Cross South Junction with 6V14 Saltend - Baglan Bay vinegar tanks.
3. This movement of Trainload Coal locos & wagons originated from Worksop/Shirebrook area & is heading towards Toton.37213 is doing all the work with 56095 'Harworth Colliery'+56099 'Fiddlers Ferry Power Station'+56128 all 'dead in train locos' & an assortedment of wagons mainly MGR coal hoppers.

1. 37280 in Trainload Petroleum livery heads towards Clay Cross South Jn with 6V14 Saltend - Baglan Bay vinegar tanks. This train had the nickname 'vinegar tanks' due to the smell given off when loaded. I always attempted to put a Cl.37/0 on this train when I was a power controller in the mid to late 1990s covering the Yorkshire/Humberside & East Midlands area. Much to the appreciation of the Cl.37 fans who lived in South Wales as the loco worked all the way to Baglan Bay & back the following day.
2. 37684 'Peak National Park' heads north from Clay Cross Junction with empty roadstone bogie hoppers bound for Peak Forest.
3. 37711 'Tremorfa Steel Works' in Trainload Metals livery heads a train of empty BDA steel carriers on the Down Fast line.

1. 37716 in Traload Metals livery heads along the Up Fast line at Clay Cross South Junction with a loaded steel train bound for Wolverhampton Steel Terminal.
2. 37883 in Trainload Metals livery heads past Clay Cross South Junction with a loaded steel train of BDA wagons bound for BSC Shelton near Etruria, Stoke On Trent. This traon would run via Derby as opposed to the majority of freight services heading south which would run via the Erewash Valley line & Toton.
3. Apologise for this grainy picture taken with an old camera shows 47238 'Bescot Yard' in RfD livery working past with refurbihed Metropolitan line undetground stock from Donaster Works IIRC. Note the barrier wagon behind the loco which is a converted VDA wagon with differnt couplings either end so the underground stock can be hauled over BR metals. There is another barrier wagon at the rear of the train.

Another 3 photos of Cl.58s working the usual MGR trains through Clay Cross South Junction during summer 1992. The locos are all in the Trainload Coal livery which was slowly progressing through the whole fleet of locos throughout the country at this time with sectorisation being the order of the day.

1. 58047 in its original railfreight livery heads a loaded MGR train on the Up Fast line at Clay Cross Junction. This train will crossover onto the Up Erewash line bound for Toton New Bank.
2. The new order Cl.60 60046 'William Wilberforce' under test as this loco is working the Peak Forest - Washwood Heath RMC service which is a Trainload Construction service, but 60046 is in Trainload Coal livery. This was commonly done as a way of getting the fleet of Cl.60s into service after being accepted by the Trainload Freight sector following weeks of testing.
3. Another Trainload Coal sector Cl.60 under test. 60059 ''Samuel Plimsoll' working an empty train of BBA wagons which is a Trainload Freight Metals service heading north for Tees Yard. The loco at tghis time was allocated to Thornaby depot Metals pool, until such time as the testing was done & the loco would return to traffic for Trainload Coal.

Thes photos were taken at Tinsley TMD [TI], Sheffield. Tinsley TMD was the main traction maintenance depot for RfD diesel fleet of locos. If you visit this place today nothing remains of this motive power depot which in the 1970s & early-mid 1980s had a very large allocation of locos based there.
1. 47301 stands at the west end of the main maintenace building. You can see on the side of the loco still the 'Thornaby Kingfisher' emblem which Thornaby depots put on their locos similar to the 'Cockney Sparrow' for Stratford locos. Unoffcially named 'CENTURION' by Tinsley TMD which had become renown for naming there locos after Greek Gods & Goddesses as well as birdes & race horses.
2. Adjacent to 47301 was 47322 unofficially named 'DERSERT ORCHID' whhich was a rce horse. Both locos wear the same red stripe railfreight livery. I had this loco based at Stratford TMD during this period & were part of a weekend only pool, however there were usually sent to Stewarts Lane T&RSMD in South London to work the loco hauled Waterloo - Exeter St. Davids - Waterloo services for a while. I sent this loco across after being bombared by other railway staff who like me were enthusiasts to cover one of the diagrams as being a Cl.47/3 was a freightloco & didn't woek passenger trains that much as it had no ETH(electric train heating).
3. 08880'MEXBOROUGH' at Tinlsey TMD in 1992. This was one of Tinsley's Cl.08 pilot, some of which were unofficially named after towns in the local area. The white Yorkshire Rose under the painted nameplate was the symbol of Tinsley TMD like the 'Thornaby Kingfisher' or '
Stratford's 'Cockney Sparrow'.

Here are another 3 photos showing when not to take a photograph, but die to constraints in positioning yourself you can't get away from other objects being in the vicinity.
1. 56128 at Gateshead TMD in 1986. The lighting structure appearing behind the loco gives ythe impression of something stocking out from the top of the loco.
2. 56054 'British Steel Llanwern' stabled at Newport Godfrey Road which were the loco holding sdgs at Newport. Agin the light ing mast next to the loco tends to spoil the picture.
3. 37010 again on Newport Godrey Road on the same day as 56054 shows lighting masts next to the loco. Things like this around railway installations tend to get in the way, but you don't always have the room to get a clear shot.

I took these phot6os whilst passing Severn Tunnel Junction marshalling yard back in September 1985 on a train from Cardiff Central to Bristol Temple Meads. I remember when I came off the footplate in 1988 I started working in the TOPS office at St. Pancras & one of the Duty Shift Managers used to work at Severn Tunnel Jct & he has it wasn't a very good place to work as they were constantly short of motive power to work trains. According to what he said the Midland Region tended to stick a single locomotive on a train heading for Severn Tunnel Jct & provided it could pull the train that was it. So usually inbound trains injto Severn Tunnel Jct yard from the midland yended to be a single Cl.25, but Severn Tunnel Jct then had to provide 2 locos for the return workings. The Eastern Region on the other hand tended to allocate a loco to a train whereby it could maintain the speed of the train over the route.

Back in the 1980s there used to be coach trips to various BR maintenance depots departing Bedford bus station early on Saturday mornings & returning late in the evening. On this particular trip in 1986 we ventured off to the north east covering Gateshead TMD, Sunderland, Thornaby TMD & Newcastle station.
1. 03063[GD] at Newcastle station covering the station pilot duties.
2. 37012 [ED] 'Loch Rannoch' at Gateshead TMD.

Some more photos I took at March during 1987/1988. There was quite alot of Departmental traffic through the area which originted from various locations such as Norwich, Bury St. Edmunds, Leyton Depot & Chesterton Jn(Cambridge). Chesterton Junction at this time produced track panels for the whole of the Eastern Region & as a result was very busy.
1. 31158[BR] enters March station from Peterborough direction with 8L39 FO Mountsorrel - Norwich TC on 07-07-1987. This train was the return loaded train that left Norwich on a Thursday evening & recessed at March East for a crew change & went forward to Mountsorrel on Friday mornings. This train would now recess at March East Jn where the March crew would leave the train to be worked forward by Norwich men a few hours later.
2. 31260[OC] passes Whitemoor Jn with 8E15 Mountsorrel - Vury St. Edmunds on 11-08-1987. This train ran every day of the week & ran to Mountsorrel via March East Jn in the morning, but when it returned in the afternoon it was booked into Whitemoor Yard for C&W examination & crew change prior to going forward to Bury St. Edmunds. This train always conveyed 2 axle vacuum braked hoppers.

There was also quite a number of freightliner trains that ran through March station during a 24 hour period. Some of which stabled in the yard at March East Jn awaiting forward traincrew.
1. 47217[TI] heads through March station towards Peterborough with a freightliner train woth 'FORD' containers.
2. A pair of Cl.37/0s also head towards Peterborough through March station. The leading loco 37209[SF] in revised large loco BR blue livery. I had a ride on this loco from Ely to March back in 1988 when I was working at Whitemoor TOPS office. This loco along with another Cl.37/0 had failed on a freightliner train at Ely. The locos had been detached & when the locos stopped in the platform at Ely I asked the driver if I could have a lift to March. He said yes & I rode on this loco to Whitemoor JUn. Can't remember the number of the other Cl.37/0 unfortunately.
