Not sure about the time, but yes the "North Express" ran from Southampton West to Cheltenham Spa Landsdown. No prizes for guessing where the "South Express" ran between.

Correct. The "North Express" finished in 1914, but the "South Express lasted until 1922.

Thanks for all the answers so far. Things seem to have dried up since the new Sims were released so I think its time for some clues to get you all back on track. Only four questions left to get. The unanswered questions are:


2. What is the longest station name displayed on a national rail station in England (including the for …)
The sign contains the station name twice and the name of the monarch.

4. Which branch line had separate train staffs for passenger and goods trains that could be issued simultaneously?
This UK branch is still in use by passenger trains. It now has a single train staff that is retained by the traincrew until the end of service.


5. Which station had a turntable installed after the line had closed and the tracks had been lifted?
The station was in the British Isles, it closed completely in the 1920's.

16. Which station has seven distant signals, but only three starting signals?
As previously suggested, this is an Ex Western region location. The signals are worked from two boxes and four of the distant arms are working.

Great King Rat,

Well done, University for Queen Elizabeth Hospital and the University of Birmingham is correct. It was much shorter when I was a student there. I remember a friend being told that there was no station at Birmingham University (by a ticket clerk cycling through the 'B' options).

At a broad guess - the Watford- St albans branch? (quite possibly OTW with axle counters actually, but the service train is locked in all day)

Good guess, you are on the right track with the island part of British Isles. Ventnor had a turntable when it opened, but photos show this was removed before the line closed in 1966. The turntable in the question served a purpose and was not ornamental.

What about passenger token Crediton-Eggsford, and freight Crediton-Melford Quarry?
Surely Crediton - Eggesford, and Crediton - Meldon Quarry are two separate branches ?

Well, tis the Barnstaple Branch these days, and the two lines run parallel for a distance (4 1/2 miles), and are issued by the same SB.
I can only help one person a day. Today's not your day. Tomorrow doesn't look too good either.

They also have/had passenger trains Exeter-Crediton-Oakhampton using the same staff. In my mind Oakhampton and Barnstaple are branches, but in my heart they are still main lines.

Why not today?

The Gunnislake branch has one staff that the driver retains throughout the journey. I know this because I drive trains over it! I also know that in the past, goods trains could be issued with a separate staff to enter the MOD compound at Ernesettle. Now, if we need to go in there, it's the branch staff that unlocks the points.

The staff is replaced in the instrument at St Budeaux Victoria Road every time a train leaves the branch, not retained by the crew until the "end of service".
