Are you counting the 4 TC units as EMU's and if so is it any of the stations on any of the lines eminating from Salisbury?
You have to get a red before you can get any other colour

17. What journey would you have had to make to connect from the "North Express" to the "Further North Express".

The Further North Express was from Inverness to Wick.

The North Express was operated by the Midland & South Western Junction Railway which operated between Southampton, Swindon and Cheltenham but I expect that with its links with the Midland Railway the train would have run further north, probably to the Midland's HQ in Derby.

So, educated guess, Derby to Inverness?
Sloppyjag,

Educated but wrong, the "North Express" was more parocial!

Peter.
Would this be the 10:10 Southampton to Cheltenham Lansdown? If so then a journey from Cheltenham to Inverness

Copping,

Not sure about the time, but yes the "North Express" ran from Southampton West to Cheltenham Spa Landsdown. No prizes for guessing where the "South Express" ran between.

Peter.
OK, I'm still a little confused by the actual answer to this one. Are you saying that one had to catch the "North Express" from Southampton to Cheltenham, and then had to find their own way to Inverness for the "Further North Express" to Wick?

Paul, no I'm not & furthermore it's not in the Salisbury area either. I must admit I didn't get this right when it was asked in a BR quiz in 1985, furthermore not having been anywhere near this location since then I'm not sure if the answer to the question is the same now as it was back then. People trying to work this one out ought to reflect back to the early to mid 1980s, if you are old enough to know the railway network back then. The answer to the question doesn't appear on any South Western sim produced by SimSig so far if that helps?

Wimbledon Park is not the answer. The next clue is it is not a station in the London area of the former BR South Western Division.
Long shot Millbrook possibly? (if only bookede stoppers work to Salisbury)

Thats not the answer Andy. The next clue I'll say is looking on the current Quail map book for the Southern Region the station currently has 2 platforms. I suspect back in 1985 it was still the same. As afar as whose guess is the closest in distance to the answer, it is this one.

Branksome. EMU's stopped at the station to enter or exit Bournemouth Depot.

You are correct, the answer was Branksome. All the 3rd rail DC units went through the station as ECS movements to & from the carriage sidings, but none were booked to stop there. Well done. Winning prize is in the post.

Yes, but you didn't HAVE to, via London was probably a lot quicker, but it is interesting that there were expresses with similar names so far apart.

Many thanks to everybody who took part.

There was one unanswered question.

16. Which station has seven distant signals, but only three starting signals?
As previously suggested, this is an Ex Western region location. The signals are worked from two boxes and four of the distant arms are working.

This is Bewdley on the Severn Valley Railway. The signals are worked by Bewdley South and Bewdley North signal boxes.

Happy new year,

Peter.
