Down routes through Topsham station 22/04/2014 at 14:31 #59301

There seem to be two ways I can set a down route through Topsham station:

The first is from signal EJ28 to the yellow triangle tacked onto Topsham station (identified as EJ26 when I hover over it). Overlap is not included.

The second is from signal EJ28 to signal EJ26. This includes the overlap segment.

Why does the first not include the overlap, and what is the rationale behind having the two routes? I can see EJ26 is needed for setting a route across the LC. Thanks for your help.

The first is a warner route. This requires a reduced overlap, in exchange for the preceding signal being approach controlled from red to ensure the train is travelling at reduced speed.

As for the rationale, I've no idea- in the opposite direction the warner route allows you to bring an Exmouth train into the station with a route set from EJ28, however in the Down direction the overlap is within the passing loop.

Looks like the Sim has the overlap and ROL in the wrong place. If you look at Danny Scroggins website you can see that the full overlap should extend onto the single line. Topsham

I'll put it on the bug board.

The same photo also shows that there's an auto-raise facility (is there an example of a CCTV crossing anywhere without such a facility?) which looks to be missing from the sim. Max might be able to leave his multi-coloured stickies behind if this was put right ;-) .

I just noticed this too, it would certainly make playing Exeter in single player that little bit easier!

Given that every such crossing in Simsig is effectively operated as a CCTV crossing, even where it's an adjacent MCB in reality, I'm of the opinion that they should all have an auto-raise facility. It's easy to remember to put the barriers up when you've just watched the train clear the crossing; less so when it's just a track circuit clearing amongst a sea of other movements. That's what I love about Trent, being able to leave the East Notts to sort itself out!

That's logged as well. I'm doubt Peter has any plans on dealing with these issues any time soon, however if he ever rebuilds it I'm sure these are things he'll look at.

Not quite right. There are two base crossing types in SimSig data: CCTV and AHB. From those, you can create the multitude of other types of crossings needed.

As for Trent, it was written at a time before the crossings became a part of the core code as they are now so they were all manually coded. As a result, the crossings may do things slightly differently than crossings on other sims. On a side note, a lot of features in Trent didn't exist in core code at the time and were manually coded....its one of the reasons there's not been an update as there's a lot of custom code to convert into data to make it all work correctly!!

One other sim worth a mention (and no plug intended) is South Humberside as this gives the user the ultimate crossing options....

Many of the crossings in the area are MCB but there was no-consensus amongst my testers as to how they should be simulated. In the end, we decided to give the user the choice....

MCB mode - The sim will raise and lower those crossing automatically with no input required from the signaller.
CCTV mode - The signaller has full manual control of them.

That way you can make it easier or harder as you see fit.

Sorry, yes, I wasn't considering AHBs as they're obviously a rather different kettle of fish, but just the MG/MCB/CCTV types. I should've mentioned South Humberside, as that was exactly the sort of example that I was thinking of! Personally, doing little more than pulling off for the occasional train through a long stretch of plain line with no regulating decisions doesn't do it for me whether single-handed or multiplayer - I'd much rather be able to concentrate on the bits that need more attention!

Any CCTV crossing protected by mechanical signals will not have an auto-raise facility.

Of course, thanks, forgot about that possibility! There is at least one exception, that being the 'Hornby Junction' training simulator. Not quite sure what to conclude from that...

Unless they are electrically/pneumatically operated semaphore signals which can automatically replace to danger!

True, hadn't thought of that one.

Stupid statement of mine as there is always an exception to every rule in signalling design.

Thanks everyone for your feedback so far. I will go back and re-read Warner signals. It would be nice for Clive, Peter Bennet or even GeoffM to comment on whether the present panel version needs slight modification or not to keep things consistent for both up and down lines.

Consistency has absolutely nothing to do with it.

Rule 1) The only consistent is the inconsistency;
Rule 2) If in doubt refer to Rule 1.

I've commented several times on this forum that I intend to rebuild Exeter - infact the current release has some rebuild data in it (correct TC lengths and shapes) but it's likely that most changes so far done will not be obvious.

Consistency always loses to accuracy.

In this case, there are open bugs to fix this area to get it to match reality.
