Picture sent to me from a friend who captured it while watching a film on TV.

The film is set in Canada, but this might have been shot elsewhere or it might belong to a preservation railway that imported it.

That headlight arrangement looks like it should be easy to identify, but I've had no luck.

Did you intend on attaching some kind of picture to the post?

It looks like Austrian Zillertalbahn No. 3 Tirol to me. I can't find a reference to anything similar in Canada.

Good spot, Peter. I think you've got the right railway. However, I've found some photos online on another Forum and think it looks more like No. 5 (in the shots I've seen of No. 3 there is no maker's plate on the side of the tank). Have a look at the posting for 02/08/2012 here

Thanks! That looks right; even the scenery matches that in my friend's photo.

I don't know why he says number 5; the second photo fairly clearly has number 3 on the side. And looking at the railway's own pictures, number 5 has a different motion and no oval plate on the tanks. It's also got two domes!

My friend sends his thanks and wonders how you identified it.

I like Austrian narrow gauge steam so I recognised the type of loco straight away. The Zillertalbahn was my second stop after discounting Sir Drefaldwyn on the Welshpool & Llanfair Railway.

Peter.
