Man, look at those primitive graphics. So glad they've been updated in the 25 years since.

Glad to see ARS was working its excellent magic even then!

New graphics cards in the early 1990s (the original hardware was not COTS due to the general unavailability of the required resolution in those days), and new software at the same time. Another major upgrade in the late 1990s, another in the 2000s, and now IECC Scaleable which - if I understand correctly - will be installed when York IECC moves to York ROC later this year. But nobody needs fancy 3d graphics with 2m colours for railway signalling, do they? SimSig Boss Log in to reply |

The buttons look like they are coming right out of the panel! Last edited: 25/04/2016 at 16:56 by Jersey_Mike Log in to reply |

" said:Well it's nice to have fonts and VGA colors.VGA first came out in 1987 but that was probably too late for an Easter 1989 release of safety related hardware. Remember that the UK requires the signaller to be able to see the railway at all times, no more than a few seconds behind, for safety reasons. I understand the US has no such requirement to do this. As for fonts: that is what you're seeing on the screen, the shapes that make letters, digits, and track elements. :doh VGA colours: 16 AIUI on VGA initially. This is all that is required for safety related applications, and indeed IECC uses about a dozen of those IIRC. That picture only has around 8 colours - and would fail the readability requirement in the UK. I don't mean picture quality, or overviews, but the font size as evidenced on other photos in that album. " said: Also, whatever 3D graphics they used on that Leeds machine are top notch. And a nice solid bell & tapper to communicate, with a decent bit of furniture to contain the indicators https://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.roscalen.com%2Fsignals%2FStAlbans%2F110710%2FBlocks2.jpg&imgrefurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.roscalen.com%2Fsignals%2FStAlbans%2Findex.htm&docid=8pWiW1gibR9k8M&tbnid=bM_6zJnmR9BJNM%3A&w=800&h=541&bih=930&biw=1280&ved=0ahUKEwiIz43r6avMAhVEOBQKHczoAWc4rAIQMwgMKAkwCQ&iact=mrc&uact=8 (we'll draw a veil over the weedy plastic substitutes).
