Please excuse if this comes across as shockingly ignorant - I have searched the wiki and could not find answers to my questions.

It is my understanding that most UK signalling is one or the other variant of SSI with odd bits of relay and perhaps now PLCs for yards. How is the simulator operating inside - does it interpret actual SSI GDL for a particular area? I had an impression that could be an IP of Siemens/Alstom/etc rather than NR?

If it does not run with real SSI GDL how is it known to be accurate? There are lots of operationally significant details requiring bespoke solutions for complex overlaps, fringe areas (when one looks into neighbouring interlocking with associated complication of summated sections / abstracted points), preset shunts, ETCS areas, POLs, various techniques for bi directional area controls, axle counter resets and so on.

How accurate and up to date are railway topologies? What is typically the source material for creating one?

The simulation authors translate and transcribe the source material available to them into the format required by the software; it does not directly load SSI data.

That wouldn’t provide the whole picture anyway as we need to simulate both the interlocking for the signalling; and the wider world for those simulated trains to run in.

SimSig is only intended for home use, and therefore the acceptable accuracy level reflects that. Whilst we try and work to be as accurate as the software and source material allows, compromises happen and are acceptable as it’s not controlling real trains; nor is it (or should be) being used to conduct any form of real life training.

Thanks, it certainly makes sense. The simulator is definitely very detailed with the look of actual VDU hence the question.
