Cambridge North platform 3 (the bay) has both the 5-car and 10-car stop boards at the end of the platform, just before the buffer stop and meaning that a 5-car train will be a long walk from the stairs/lift to the exit.

Is there some reason not to put the 5-car board at the mid-point? Nothing comes immediately to mind.

There's no scheduled service I can see doing joins or divides at CMB. Maybe it's just to catch out distracted drivers

Typically I would expect trains to be drawn right the way down so that you can fit something in on top. The advantage of that is if the service goes up the wall and the train ends up getting left there for a few hours it's not a problem if you want to put something else in there.
