It is possible to click on the double-arrow symbol in the Shout Box header and minimise the Box as you navigate round the site. However, using Firefox, Opera or Safari, the Box cannot be minimised on the Download/Uploads and Shop pages (and also the Submit an Article page when you are logged in). In those instances, the Box displays by default; while the symbol is still there, clicking on it does not minimise the Box. The Box can be minimised on those pages using IE8 or Google Chrome. Any reason for the inconsistent behaviour? It should be something related to JavaScript (and perhaps CSS) - not a straightforward thing to debug, I am afraid. On my browser in those page I can not minimize the shoutbox, I can not minimized any other elements in the left column (searc, main menu, user menu). (the browser I am using is seamonkey, similar to firefox). Log in to reply |

This is actually an issue I have raised with Google since I cannot seem to minimize any of the boxes whilst using Google Chrome...? Of course I used to be able to do this in IE wihout a problem. I'm getting consistent behaviour between Google Chrome and Firefox - won't minimise on the Downloads/Shop pages but it does on the other pages. On IE it works fine. Something odd with the Shop and Downloads modules I guess. The (lack of) minimising affects all boxes in the left pane, not just the shout box.

Just thought to try Safari on the iPhone - same as Chrome and Firefox, correctly minimises on all pages except Shop and Downloads. Three browsers exhibit one behaviour; IE exhibits a different behaviour. Coincidence?

Geoff, The Shop area may possibly think the boxes on the left are a trolley area for purchases, otherwise the Download page should work If all other pages do. If it works fine on IE then it should work the same on FireFox for definate. As the XHTML and CSS code is the same for IE/FireFox. I am not sure about Google Chrome or the IPhone as I have not had much use of them yet. I am on a computer in college at the min. But when I get home I will test out the Firefox on my laptop and I will report back here what happens. Alan. Log in to reply |

Sorry if this is reviving an old thread but if I use Google Chrome on my computer I can actually minimize the boxes on the home page and other pages no problem but I still cannot do this using Chrome on my laptop. Both computer and laptop are running exactly the same versions of Chrome. Have consulted my resident techie and he suggested it could be a "Flash issue" but I wouldn't know either way. Any help/advice? Thanks. Any views and / or opinions expressed by myself are from me personally and do not represent those of any company I either work for or am a consultant for. Log in to reply |

You have to be careful with IE....It was well known to have some foibles that caused web designers to alter their web coding so that IE showed things properly. Then when Firefox came along, a lot of sites didn't work properly. I far prefer to use Firefox as the yardstick than IE! Just my opinion for what it's worth.....

Sorry again to be re-raising this thread but I have an update that I've found out what the problem was. Google Chrome has a number of extensions available to download that can do all sorts / be useful for loads of things and it is the use of these extensions that seems to be the problem. Browsing the website via 'Incognito' (which is basically the Google Chrome version of 'InPrivate Browsing' on IE8, but less words!) allows me to minimize all boxes on all pages..I think. Thanks to everyone for all their replies/attempts at helping with this Any views and / or opinions expressed by myself are from me personally and do not represent those of any company I either work for or am a consultant for. Just another update (probably the final one now) that Google Chrome has now updated itself to Version 6.0 (6.0.472.55 if you want to be exact) and I can now minimize all the boxes on all pages (except the Downloads/Uploads page/s). Just a shame now that it has changed quite a bit so I'm going to have to get used to things being a tad different. Still, at least I can now minimize the stuff at the side of the website without having to go to Incognito mode Do I owe thanks to Google for their very premature Xmas present?!! ^o Any views and / or opinions expressed by myself are from me personally and do not represent those of any company I either work for or am a consultant for. In v5 I could also minimize everything. For me, v6 has not made any site look/do better. The bad layout of www.sporenplan.nl (for example, I mean the white stripes at the left side) hasn't gone yet in Chrome.
