While I'm aware that the adverts help fund the upkeep of the website, and most of the time I simply ignore them, this one really concerned me. From a potential new user's point of view, the problem is hopefully obvious.

Presumably it's just the random advertiser's selection and there's nothing to do about it, but it does seem expressly designed to cause confusion.

Thanks again for the brilliant game.

I'm not surprised that particular ad may cause confusion, it is a bit deceptive/misleading.

I'm sure everyone would appreciate this particular one blocked and so with that in mind...

If I understand the Google AdSense settings correctly, whoever has access to the account (one assumes just Geoff?) would just need to login, go to AdSense Setup -> Competitive Ad Filter and enter the URL vgamenetwork.com which should rid of this particular one

Must admit I've seen this ad quite a few times but hadn't actually clocked that it could be confusing. Anyway, it should be gone within the hour. Thanks for pointing it out.

The problem is that ads are targetted so keywords like "download" (in the menu) are going to trigger adverts along those themes. Reminds me of a thread on a different forum where one particular advert was discussed and the more it was discussed, the more it came up along with related adverts. Something along the lines of bagpipes an ponies (don't ask).

Perhaps adding an 'Advert' banner above and below the advert box would solve the problem quickly and easily.

If there were more donations, Geoff wouldn't have to rely on advertising income and thus no adverts.

And maybe not everyone is in a position to donate and some may click on the adverts in lieu of this :S

This is the point, that why there should be an ad that is such misleading.
This can provide more $$ for the SimSig team!

This must be the solution.
Well I seldom notice websites that don't have the note "Advertisement" near the advert.

There's a B&Q one and if I click on it it gives me the details of the Skegness store, heaven knows where that comes from.

If the one above was previously blocked, then it has just reoccurred again.

the first time i visited the SimSig site, I was tricked instantly by the download ad and even downloading the file. so from a newcomers point of view, this is a serious problem.
luckily i didn't run the .exe that it gave me :S i would consider myself quite computer-savvy but i couldn't see that it wasn't an ad. THere isn't a way of stopping these ads completely due to the keywords, so for the safety of the future inhabitants of Simsigland, maybe there needs to be a clearer banner which denotes them as ads.

Having very nearly succumbed to the very same advert on a different website where I was trying to download something, I've now also reported this advert to Google. It would appear I'm not the first to do so, or the first to complain on the web about it. It is pure and simple trickery, and from what I've read the software is particularly nasty as well, so I'm surprised Google haven't clamped down on it already.

I've found just using the Adblock software you can download on Chrome works a charm. Before, that said advert fooled the hell out of me and clicked on it a few times, however, I realised what it was.

but adblock software stops this site from paying its way for hosting with adverts and so may led to software not being free any more

Indeed, while we are not allowed to encurage people to click on adverts, if you do then it helps pay for the site- which is why we have them. What we do need to ensure is that those we have are suitable for clicking on.
