May seem a stupid question but how do i set signal for example K975 to K981? I can't do it without setting the intermediate shunt signal, but the documentation indicates that this should not be necessary.

The K977 signal in between K975 and K981 is not (just) a shunt-signal, it has also a main (round) aspect. A shunt-only signal would only have the triangle-like head, like K249 just next to K977.
